Privacy Policy
In short
- The app runs on your Mac. Window previews, screen data, and everything the Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions expose are processed on your device and never sent to us.
- We collect the minimum needed to sell licenses and ship updates: your email address, your license key, purchase records held by Stripe, and a hashed device identifier for seat counting.
- We do not run analytics or advertising trackers, and we never sell personal information.
- Crumble Ask chats go directly from your Mac to Anthropic using your own API key. We never see them.
1. Who we are
Apple Crumble ("we", "us") is an independent software business operated from Australia. We make the Apple Crumble app for macOS, which includes the Crumble Bar taskbar, Crumble Snap window management, and the optional Crumble Ask add-on (together, the "App"), and we operate the applecrumble.tech website (the "Site").
We are not affiliated with, authorized by, sponsored by, or otherwise approved by Apple Inc. You can reach us about anything in this policy at hello@applecrumble.tech.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Purchases. When you buy a license through our payment provider, Stripe, we receive your email address, the product you bought, and payment status. Your card details go to Stripe only and never touch our systems.
- License activation. When you enter a license key, the App sends the key and a one-way hash of your Mac's hardware identifier to our server so we can enforce the seat count. The hash cannot be reversed into a serial number or used to identify your Mac outside our service.
- Feedback and bug reports. If you use the Request a Feature or Report a Bug forms, we receive your message, your answers to the form questions, the App and macOS version, and any attachments you choose to include (such as screenshots or logs). Contact details are only included if you type them in.
- Email. If you email us, we keep the correspondence so we can help you.
Information collected automatically
- Site hosting. The Site is served by Cloudflare, which processes IP addresses and standard request logs to deliver pages and protect against abuse.
- Update checks. The App checks our update feed (via the Sparkle framework) for new versions. The request includes your App version and macOS version so the right update can be offered. We do not use update checks to identify or profile you.
- Abuse prevention. Our API applies rate limits. Where an IP address is retained for this purpose (for example on feedback submissions), it is stored only as a keyed one-way hash.
- Fonts. The Site loads typefaces from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests font files from Google and Google receives your IP address as part of that request.
- Payment pages. Stripe sets cookies on its checkout and pricing components for payment processing and fraud prevention, under Stripe's privacy policy.
What the App does not collect
- The Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions power the taskbar, window previews, and snapping entirely on your device. Window titles, thumbnails, screen contents, keystrokes, and files are never uploaded, stored remotely, or shared.
- The App contains no analytics, telemetry, advertising SDKs, or crash reporters that phone home.
- Your free trial state is stored locally in the macOS Keychain. Starting a trial requires no account, email, or card.
Crumble Ask
Crumble Ask is an optional chat feature that talks to Anthropic's Claude API. It uses an API key that you obtain from Anthropic and store in your Mac's Keychain. Conversations travel directly from your Mac to Anthropic and are governed by Anthropic's privacy policy. We do not receive, store, or have any access to your conversations or your API key. Simple calculations are answered on-device without contacting anyone.
3. How we use information
- To deliver license keys, activate and validate licenses, and manage subscriptions.
- To process payments and refunds through Stripe, and to meet tax and accounting obligations.
- To provide updates through our download and update infrastructure.
- To read and respond to feedback, bug reports, and support requests.
- To protect the service against fraud, abuse, and misuse of license keys.
- To comply with the law.
We do not sell or rent personal information, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not use it to train machine-learning models.
4. Service providers
We share information only with the providers that run our infrastructure, and only what each needs:
| Provider | Purpose | What they process |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe | Payments, subscriptions, tax calculation | Email, payment details, billing country, purchase history |
| Cloudflare | Site hosting, API, database, and file storage | Request logs, license records, feedback submissions and attachments |
| Resend | Transactional email | Your email address and the content of license or notification emails |
| Google Fonts | Typefaces on the Site | IP address and browser details when fonts load |
| Anthropic | Crumble Ask chat (optional, your own API key) | Chat messages, sent directly from your device |
These providers operate globally, so your information may be processed outside your country, including in the United States. Each provider commits to recognised safeguards for international transfers, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, and we only share what is described above.
5. Cookies
The Site itself sets no analytics or advertising cookies. Stripe's embedded pricing and checkout components set cookies that are necessary for payment processing and fraud prevention. If you never interact with the purchase flow, no payment cookies are needed.
6. How long we keep information
- License and purchase records: for as long as your license is active, and afterwards as required for tax, accounting, and fraud-prevention purposes (generally 5 to 7 years).
- Feedback and bug reports: until the report is resolved and no longer useful, or earlier if you ask us to delete it.
- Server logs and rate-limit data: short-lived and rotated automatically.
- Email correspondence: for as long as reasonably needed to support you.
7. Security
All traffic between your browser or the App and our services is encrypted with TLS. License keys are stored on our server only as one-way hashes for lookup, with an encrypted copy held solely so we can resend your key to you. Device identifiers are stored only as one-way hashes. Feedback attachments live in a private storage bucket with no public access. On your Mac, your license receipt and any API keys are stored in the macOS Keychain.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. We honour these requests regardless of jurisdiction where we reasonably can. To exercise any right, email hello@applecrumble.tech from the address associated with your purchase so we can verify the request.
- Australia: we handle personal information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles. If you are unhappy with our response to a complaint, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).
- EU / UK: where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we process personal data to perform our contract with you (licenses, updates, support), to meet legal obligations (tax records), and for our legitimate interests (abuse prevention). You may lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
- United States: we do not sell or share personal information as defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act and similar state laws. Residents of those states may exercise access, correction, and deletion rights as described above, without discrimination.
9. Children
The App and Site are not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here and update the effective date above. Material changes will be highlighted on the Site or, where appropriate, notified by email.
11. Contact
